Everything you need to know about eligibility, merit-based selection, and required documents for applying to Alpha University.
Eligibility Requirements
- Somaliland Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Form Four) or an equivalent recognised certificate.
- Minimum grade of C (or 50%) average in the national secondary examination.
- Pass in the Alpha University entrance examination (English, Mathematics, general aptitude).
- Health Sciences and Engineering: credit in Biology/Chemistry or Mathematics/Physics respectively.
- Form Four certificate or equivalent, any grade pass.
- Pass in the entrance examination or an interview.
- Suitable for working adults — evening classes available at all branches.
- A recognised Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 2.5/4.0.
- Two reference letters (academic or professional).
- Statement of purpose (500–800 words).
- Interview with the Postgraduate School panel.
Merit Criteria
- 50% weighting on the national secondary examination results.
- 40% weighting on the Alpha University entrance examination.
- 10% weighting on interview (programme-specific).
- Top 5% of applicants per branch are eligible for merit scholarships.

- Two recent passport-sized photographs
- Bachelor's degree & transcript (postgraduate applicants)
- Two reference letters (postgraduate applicants)
- Registration fee receipt ($30 paid to Dahabshiil account DHBNK-HRGD01410)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I study at a branch other than Hargeisa?+
Yes. You choose your branch — Hargeisa, Burco, Berbera or Laascanood — when you register. Programme availability varies by branch; see each branch page.
How do I pay my fees?+
Fees are paid to the Dahabshiil account DHBNK-HRGD01410. Keep the receipt and present it at the Finance Office or upload it in the portal.
Are there scholarships?+
Yes — merit scholarships for top entrance-exam scorers, plus orphan and needs-based discounts of up to 50%.
Are classes in the morning or evening?+
Most programmes run a morning shift; many branches also offer evening shifts for working students.
What language is used for teaching?+
English is the main language of instruction. Islamic jurisprudence courses use Arabic, and support is available in Somali.
Can I transfer from another university?+
Yes. Transfer credits are evaluated by the Registrar based on your transcript and course descriptions.
